What it is
This is a skincare formulation designed to protect the skin from various types of light exposure, including UVA, UVB, infrared, and blue light rays. It also aims to address the visible effects of previous photodamage, such as discoloration and dark spots. The product incorporates multiple components to offer these protective and corrective functions.
Key ingredients and their functions
- Zinc Oxide - UV filter
- Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate - antioxidant
- Dimethylmethoxy Chromanyl Palmitate - skin brightening agent
- Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate - antioxidant
- Superoxide Dismutase - antioxidant
- Glutathione - antioxidant
- Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid - humectant
- N-prolyl Palmitoyl Tripeptide-56 Acetate - peptide
How it works
The product is formulated to protect the skin by using Zinc Oxide, which acts as a UV filter against UVA and UVB rays. Antioxidants like Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Superoxide Dismutase, and Glutathione aim to reduce potential oxidative stress caused by environmental exposures. Dimethylmethoxy Chromanyl Palmitate works towards improving the appearance of skin discoloration. Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid helps in maintaining skin hydration by attracting moisture, while N-prolyl Palmitoyl Tripeptide-56 Acetate, a peptide, is included for its skin-conditioning properties. Together, these ingredients contribute to both protecting the skin from future damage and minimizing the appearance of existing concerns.

This is an expensive SPF, but there's none other like it. It works beautifully under makeup, has a balm-like texture that you have to warm up between your hands. It applies a little white due to the mineral content, but blends in when you work it in. It gives a good glow and looks great under stick foundation (I use Bobbi Brown or Ami Cole) for a one-and-done look with a mist of setting spray. The spatula is one of the best I've used, and actually useful for the product. Though the jar is large, I take it with me for work travel with the spatula, and it's my go-to under makeup. For an even smoother, long-lasting look, I'll layer Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Primer and mist some setting spray.

OK, so when I first tried the Multimodal Defender, I did not like it. I felt like it was really hard to use it on my face without getting a white cast. I tried massaging it into my hands first till it got melty, but I still had a bit of a white cast, so I stopped using it. At the beginning of the summer, I thought I might as well use it on the backs of my hands since I wasn't going to use it on my face. Guess what? By the end of the summer, ALL of my freckles on the back of my hands were GONE and the texture of my skin greatly improved. I have changed my mind about this product and I will use it on my face, neck, and chest (and my hands!) next summer, white cast or no!

The first sunscreen I've ever used that truly helps/improves/protects my skin. There is no sunscreen like it - and I've tried all the best (Chantecaille, Isdin, Jan Marini, Alastin). I was unsure of the texture at first but it's different than other sunscreens for a reason.

This has really helped clear the discoloration on my face - love that! What I don't like is that it repels makeup, including the tinted hydrator. Products just sit on top of the multimodal defender. I have also tried using the tinted hydrator first and that didn't work either. How do I make these products work better together?

I LOVE U Beauty products but this one wasn't for me. It was tacky to the touch and didn't sit well on my sensitive skin type. Because I believe in the brand, I'm glad a tried it. (Customer service was great, btw)
